Low churn Keeping existing customers lowers the cost of acquiring news ones&mdash, timberland sale;and proves that people will continue to pay for the company’s cloud services.
Sustained revenue growth Monetization of the customer growth. Even Twitter has a monetization strategy now, and acquirers are looking for clouds that are accretive to revenues.
In order for a cloud computing company to make it rain, there needs to be evidence that it has the potential to take a market by storm. After talking to a number of large incumbents that could be acquirers of cloud startups, the key items that would drive them to an acquisition are:
It's Cloudy, but When Will It Rain?
The innovation coming out of the cloud computing market has, in many ways, made infrastructure startups interesting to venture capitalists again. Despite our excitement over the potential of cloud computing to transform IT,uggs boots, however, weighing on the minds of many in the VC community is what sort of time frame we should expect for exits. To put it more bluntly, we want to know when it’s going to rain—when VC investments in cloud computing will result in acquisitions or even an initial public offering.
Consider Slicehost. It was acquired by Rackspace after just two years of operations, during which its user base grew to over 15,000 from nothing. Such rapid customer growth, combined with strong business metrics and hosting services that were complimentary to those of Rackspace made clear the value proposition of buying Slicehost. And Rackspace got a great deal — the combined purchase price of Slicehost and another acquisition announced at the same time, cheap ugg boots, Jungle Disk, was around $11.5 million.
The hype surrounding cloud computing is creating upward pressure for the industry to produce rainmakers. And there are a lot of cloud startups forming—at Panorama, I see a venture-funding pitch from at least 10 new startups every week, at least half of which are cloud startups working in the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) spaces.
Rapid customer growth Solid evidence of nonlinear customer growth. Not every cloud needs to grow like Facebook or Salesforce, but it needs to be growing—quickly.
Widespread use Adoption in multiple geographies shows that the cloud is not a one-market player but can scale to a global level.

The massive amount of data crunching necessary for high level research is often extremely expensive or not readily available–or both. Intel’s solution is Progress Thru Processors, a computing application built on the Facebook platform that allows people to donate their PC’s available data processing capacity to research projects such as Rosetta@home, which uses computers to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases.
In addition to Rosetta@home, Progress Thru Processors participants can choose to contribute processor power to the research efforts of Climateprediction.net and Africa@home. Climateprediction.net is dedicated to increased understanding of global climate change by predicting the Earth’s climate and testing the accuracy of climate models. Africa@home is currently focused on finding optimal strategies to combat malaria by studying simulation models of disease transmission and the potential impact of new anti-malarial drugs and vaccines.
The application will activate only when a PC’s performance is not being fully utilized. When the participant’s computer usage demands more processor performance, ghd pure, the application defers and sits idle until spare processing capabilities become available again, Intel said. The application runs automatically as a background process on a PC and will not affect performance or any other tasks, according to Intel.
Intel teamed up with GridRepublic on Monday to launch a Facebook application that allows the spare processing power in a PC to be used to fight diseases and study climate change.
Facebook app lets Intel PCs donate processor power
Can’t donate your personal time to a good cause? Intel is providing what may be the next best option.
“By simply running an application on your computer, which uses very little incremental resources, you can expand computing resources to researchers,” Deborah Conrad, Intel vice president and general manager of corporate marketing, said in a statement.

Progress Thru Processors does not require participants to leave their computers powered up unnecessarily. By keeping their PCs on only as they normally would, participants will still be contributing, Intel said. GridRepublic application allows computers to work on public-interest research projects when the machines are not otherwise in use.
